about northern light

The home of northern light is located at alstonville in the beautiful, sub-tropical hinterland of byron bay, new south wales, australia.

Architecturally engineered to make best use of light, wind, rain and all natural resources, the building design and functions express the philosophy of working in harmony with nature.

The studio, for example, runs on a unique cooling system using rainwater collected from the roof and stored in cool underground tanks. In hot weather the cool water is dispersed onto the roofing, providing effective interior cooling with very little energy use. The water is re-filtered and re-used in a continuing cycle. To air condition this entire building costs approximately 12 cents per day.

In the wax melting room, whitened walls reflect magnified sunlight to capture the light, raising room temperature. This simple practice reduces our power requirements by more than half for keeping wax molten.

All of our lighting is either natural sunlight or 24 volt system.

At northern light, we eat from our own garden and drink from our own rain water supply.

The candle studio grounds include a pocket of remnant lowland subtropical rainforest, an area being replanted, maintained, protected and sustained with much care.

environmentally friendly and sustainable

We are attempting to walk with the lightest step.

All packaging is made from recycled cardboard and printed with non-toxic, renewable soy-based ink.

The porcelain holders are crafted by a master, washable for re-use. The holders are reusable and made from recyclable australian tin.

Outer boxes are secured with water-based gum arabic and recycled paper; we do not use any sticky tapes or glues. northern light never uses hazardous waxes such as palm oil, soy wax and paraffin. Each parcel is packed as if destined for a prince.

the founder

jeffrey, owner and creator of northern light is a mystery. He is a beekeeper. He has a life time association with bees and hides in the northern rivers of new south wales.

Jeffrey would move up to 1000 hives at a time, often by himself into beautiful and remote locations in pursuit of the finest nectars.

Out of his knowledge derived from nature, and his passion for bees, jeffrey created northern light. What started with a child and a small few hives has grown into australia's largest candle manufacturer; the worlds foremost and leading bees wax candle light company.
