About
The home
of northern light is located in the beautiful, sub-tropical hinterland of northern new south wales, australia.
Australia's first and original eco friendly candle company, northern light is producing the finest beeswax candles available; we do this with a passion by nurturing the pristine ingredient of australian organic beeswax from the beehive all the way to your living space.
The concept of a beeswax tea light began with northern light in australia, in april 1992.
The world's original, sustainable beeswax tea light company, northern light was the first to begin educating and perfecting quality and production of organic beeswax tea lights, world wide.
Northern light is still the only candle company capable of producing hundreds of thousands of consistent quality beeswax tea lights, placing these gifted lights all around the world, every year.
All of northern light's beeswax is organically certified and quality assured.
The studio of northern light
is architecturally engineered to make best use of light, wind, rain and all natural resources, northern light's studio design and functions express the philosophy of working in harmony with nature.
This purpose built studio is owned outright, reducing costs and thus the price of the candles.
The studio runs on a unique cooling system using rainwater,
collected from the roof and stored in cool underground tanks. In hot weather the cool water is dispersed onto the roofing, providing effective interior cooling with very little energy use. The water is re-filtered and re-used in a continuing cycle. To air condition the entire studio costs approximately 9 cents per day.
The main heating system for melting the beeswax and warming the candle studio is a modified wood heated energy plant.
The plant has been engineered and adapted, so that it runs automatically on either waste wood or the hard shells of the macadamia nut, both 100% bio fuel.
This investment in sustainable industry alone reduced northern light's carbon emissions by 67%, overnight, cutting the energy bill to shreds, thus making the beeswax candles more economical, for you.
The precious bees wax comes only in contact with pharmaceutical/ food grade stainless steel, which is heated only by wood fired rain water.
This process makes a superior and nurtured product.
The main wax melting room has been built with a glass house roof,
the whitened walls and glass house roofing reflect the magnified sunlight to capture the light, raising room temperature to above 50 degrees in summer. This simple practice reduces our power requirements by more than half for keeping wax molten. Saving the environment from burden; and is a cost saving for you as well.
The beeswax candle production room has thick, insulted walls, floor and ceiling, air tight cold room doors, double glazed windows – this keeps the production room cool and at a stable temperature, with no ongoing costs.
All of northern light's lighting is either natural sunlight or 24 volt system
or candle light at night of course, all very effective, with minimum energy requirements.
The design of the studio was founded on water capture
northern light is self sufficient in water needs, using no potable town water at all since the studio's conception. Using no chlorine, the 10 rain water tanks are always overflowing, sustainably so. Chlorine in water is an issue when producing beeswax candles, chlorine is absorbed into beeswax and can be transmitted via fume when the candle is burning, this is the main reason behind the use of only rain water at NL. Northern Light is respecting the bees wax to a very high standard, creating the safest fume rating possible for any candle. All other candle manufacturers in Australia are using chlorine based water, most overlook this important issue.
The grounds and gardens of northern light include a pocket of remnant lowland subtropical rainforest; an area being replanted, maintained, protected and sustained with much care.
Northern light's staff vehicles are all 5 star euro emission standard.
Environmentally friendly and sustainable
With the lightest of steps, northern light is a living example of sustainable industry, setting new standards for others to copy, every year.
Northern light beeswax is organically certified and sustainable.
The packaging is made from 100% post consumer waste, made in australia and printed with non-toxic, renewable soy-based ink.
All of northern light's packaging has been designed in house – the packs are all put together by clever folds in the design, needing no glues.
The porcelain holders are also australian made. These australian porcelains are luminous, beautiful, reusable and washable and designed to suit our all original candle portfolio.
Outer boxes are secured with water-based gum and recycled paper; no plastic tapes, glues or wrappings.
Every consignment that leaves northern light is gift packaged with taste, as if destined for a prince.
Northern light remains at the forefront of australian candle manufacture, leading by education, example and quality.
The founder
Jeffrey lives very quietly, deeply involved in the world of beekeeping and has been expertising in beeswax for over 3 decades.
He is sitting on the board of organic certifying bodies and committees and is involved in research and development in the beekeeping world, continually involved with some of australia's most renown beekeepers.
As a beekeeper, jeffrey has had a life time association with bees. He would move up to 1000 hives at a time, often by himself into beautiful and remote locations in pursuit of the finest nectars.
Out of his knowledge derived from nature, and his calling to bees, jeffrey created northern light in a small back yard shed in 1975. What started with a child and a small few hives has grown into australia's largest candle manufacturer; the worlds foremost and leading bees wax candle light company.
